Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center became one of the first hospitals in Northern Virginia to provide robotic-arm assisted total knee and partial knee replacements with Stryker’s Mako System.

This advanced robotic technology assists the surgeon and improves accuracy. It uses the Mako Total Knee application. It is a knee replacement treatment, which is designed to get relief from the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis.

Surgeons can use the Mako System through CT-based, 3D modeling of bone anatomy. This creates a personalized surgical plan and identifies the implant size, orientation, and alignment based on each patient’s unique anatomy.

This Mako System enables surgeons to modify the surgical plan intra-operatively and assists the surgeon in carrying out bone resections. Since only that part of the knee damaged by osteoarthritis is targeted, surgeons can resurface the diseased portion of the knee. It spares the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding the knee joint.

Eastern side of Prince William County in Woodbridge is Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, also offers a similar service.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center offers robotic and computer-aided surgical techniques. Susan Bahoric, a hospital spokeswoman said that these techniques allow orthopedic surgeons to determine the best course of action to fit the individual needs of their patients. It caters to the individual’s specific needs.

Technology has made a considerable contribution to the medical field. Knee replacement surgery can now be done more precisely and accurately with the help of robotic technology - robotic and computer-aided surgical techniques.
